Active Release Technique

Dr. Woodward has found that results are longest-lasting when chiropractic treatments are combined with good nutrition, soft tissue work, and strengthening exercise. Patients find once adhesions between muscle fibers are corrected (through Active Release and/ or Massage), they have less restriction in movement, greater athletic performance, less pain, and fewer injuries.

"You don’t have to put up with the health problems people used to."

The majority of injuries on the field, at home, or at work are soft tissue injuries. These injuries are often lumped into general classifications of tendinitis, bursitis, and sprain/ strains. These conditions often would become chronic and resistant to muscle relaxors, anti-inflammatories, or even physical therapy. You may have been told, “this is just something you have to live with!

Often we hear “I have a weak ankle and that’s just the way it is” or “I just always have tight shoulders”. But it’s just NOT that way anymore.

Active Release Technique is now available to patients in the North Dallas, Richardson, and Addison areas to address these chronic conditions.  Combined with chiropractic care, soft tissue care can save up to 80% of treatment costs and cut down the need for non-specific long-term care.

Active Release uses patented movement-based soft tissue techniques to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with A.R.T. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do overuse conditions occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen due to spasms and restrictions (hypoxia).

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker.  This creates a cascade of effects. Tension on tendons leads to chafing and inflammation.  We see this as bursitis, tendonitis, or nerves that are pinched or trapped. You may notice reduced ranges of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What is an Active Release Session like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. Dr. Woodward uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow Dr. Woodward to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.
