Chiropractic Care and Its Many Benefits
Chiropractors focus on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. Chiropractic care emphasizes manual treatments including manipulation and/or mobilization of the joints and muscles. Chiropractors are primary care providers for the muscles and joint conditions. Anyone can see a doctor of chiropractic without a referral.
Chiropractic Research
A 2010 meta analysis reviewed a number of published studies to determine the strength of scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of manual treatment for various conditions.
Lead author Dr. Gert Bronfort reviewed 49 relevant systematic reviews and 16 evidence-based clinical guidelines and found manual treatments to be effective for low back pain, neck pain, migraine headaches, dizziness, and several extremity joint conditions.
A 2014 follow-up study reviewed new research and found moderate evidence to support the benefits of manual therapy combined with exercise for rotator cuff disorders. Dr. Christine Clar, the lead author, notes an increased number of quality studies to support conditions from the original 2010 study. One note was stronger support for the use of spinal mobilization in treating cervicogenic and other types of headaches.
Limitations
Our office has been successful in treating sciatica, tail bone pain, TMJ disorders, and premenstrual syndrome using manual therapy. However, these studies do indicate the need for additional research on these conditions.
Conclusion
If you are considering chiropractic care, these studies can help you know there is supporting evidence for certain conditions. Certain conditions respond well to chiropractic care. Research should expand as areas that need further study are determined for the use of chiropractic care.
