Spinal manipulation is one of the techniques chiropractors utilize to treat headaches coming from the neck. Chiropractic adjustments show benefits to patients with headaches. A recent study determines how much care produces the best results for patients.
In a random controlled trial, a dose-response relationship was studied between spinal manipulation therapy compared to light massage. The primary outcome measure was the number of days with headaches. Over 250 patients with chronic cervicogenic headaches were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups. They receive treatment 3 times per week for 6 weeks. The groups received either 0, 6, 12, or 18 chiropractic adjustments. On visits where participants did not receive adjustments, their treatment includes a light massage.
At baseline, the mean age was 41 years old. 71% were female, with chronic headaches for 7.3 years and 16 out of every 28 days having headaches.
At week 6, patients who receive 12 or 16 sessions show similar results that are statistically significant than those that received 0 or 6 sessions.
At week 12 (6 weeks after care had ended) those receiving 18 sessions had far superior and lasting results compared to any other group.
The results suggest about 2/3 of patients with cervicogenic headaches can expect clinically significant improvement with 18 chiropractic manipulations. Over half can expect at least a 50% reduction in their chronic headache days. This benefit was sustained throughout the rest of the year the study was run.
Given the cardiovascular risks with NSAIDs such as Alieve and Ibuprofen, it is our recommendation that chiropractic spinal manipulation is over the standard medication approach for headaches stemming from the neck.
