Sleep and Chiropractic Care

The American Sleep Association reports that 50-70 million adults in the United States (US) have a sleep disorder. Those with poor sleep have several adverse health outcomes, including a higher risk for musculoskeletal pain.

Current research suggests the relationship between musculoskeletal pain and sleep disturbance is bi-directional. Individuals with a sleep condition are more likely to develop a pain condition. People with pain are more likely to have trouble sleeping.

Chiropractic Care Study

Chiropractic care has been studied in many populations where lack of sleep is common. Lack of sleep can occur in patients with fibromyalgia. Characteristics of fibromyalgia are sleep disturbance, fatigue, and pain in several sites across the body. One such study produced in 2000 reported that fibromyalgia patients who received 30 chiropractic treatments experienced major developments with respect to pain intensity, fatigue, and sleep quality.

In a routine review, researchers identified 15 studies that associate chiropractic care with benefits for patients with insomnia. Low back pain and neck pain are two of the most common sleep-interfering chronic conditions. Chiropractic management is RECOMMENDED as the first level of care in clinical practices worldwide.

Chiropractic treatment provides various methods to help with sleep troubles. Manual therapies include manipulation, mobilization, and soft-tissue work can help relax the nervous system. Nutritional approaches include the use of supplements like melatonin, L-theanine, 5-HTP (5-hydroxy-tryptophan), and valerian root. Weight management (obesity is a risk factor for insomnia). Other treatment methods include education and advice on sleeping position napping and relaxation methods (breathing exercises, mindful meditation. Eliminate “screen-time” prior to bed, pillow placement, and more are given to address sleep troubles.
