The Effect of Back Pain on Walking

The earlier you get treatment for your lower back pain, the less care it will take and the more complete recovery you can expect to achieve. Seeking chiropractic help sooner also reduces your risk for additional injuries. Seeking care early can detect problems in other areas of the body and improve your overall mobility and quality of life.

A February 2020 study showed individuals with chronic low back pain had significantly altered movement patterns in all three joints of the lower extremities. We frequently will see patients that have a hard time walking or getting as a result of these changes.

Other studies confirm that individuals with back problems exhibit altered walking kinematics. This may happen as an unconscious response to avoid pain and places added stress on the hips, knees, and ankles. This stress can could lead to additional problems in other areas. Alternatively stiffness and movement problems in other areas could be what is causing issues with the lower back.

Either way, these findings underscore the importance of considering the health of other areas outside your pain.  This is called a holistic approach. Chiropractors excel at using a holistic approach to treat low back pain.
