Tablet and Smartphone Related Neck Pain

Smartphone users often adopt an awkward posture with their heads bent forward of their shoulders. Text neck posture can place added strain on the muscles in the back of the neck, shoulders, and upper back. This can lead to musculoskeletal pain. Researchers are looking into how electronic tablet use affects posture. Smart technology can elevate the risk of pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Tablet Neck Pain Research

In 2018, The University of Nevada, Las Vegas researchers reviewed survey data from 412 university students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The study regards their electronic tablet use and associated musculoskeletal symptoms. The research team found frequent tablet users reported moderate or higher levels of neck and shoulder pain. About 10% of daily tablet users in the survey had severe neck and/or shoulder pain associated with tablet use. 46% of daily tablet users said they stopped using their devices when they experienced discomfort.

The researchers added that regular tablet users often used their device in awkward positions. Awkward positions include sitting with their legs folded on the floor or laying on their stomach or side while looking down at their device. This can occurs more in younger individuals without a dedicated workspace. Awkward postures can place excessive stress on the neck, shoulders, and upper back, leading to musculoskeletal discomfort.

Research also found that women were 2x more likely to experience pain related to tablet use than men. This is possibly due to anatomical differences between men and women skeletal structures that may result in more extreme postural strain while typing on their devices.

Conclusion

To minimize the risk for musculoskeletal pain associated with tablet use, experts recommend sitting in a chair with back support. You can also place the screen slightly below eye level and use an external keyboard. When typing on an external keyboard, have your elbows bent at 90 degrees and take mini-breaks to stretch. You can also perform forward posture correction exercises during your mini-breaks as well. If you continue to experience pain associated with smartphone or tablet use, consult with a chiropractor near you.
